Porthos has been keeping some distance, mainly because he's trying to take Aramis' advice. He's trying to let Athos lead because clearly, nothing that he's been doing has been working. As it is, he's happy that Athos has suggested they come out on this hunt, though there's a part of him wary that without having spoken for so long, they might be rusty.
